Matt Dillon est né à Nouvelle-Rochelle, aux Etats-Unis, en 1964. D'origine irlandaise, l'acteur américain a cinq frères et sœurs, dont l'un, Kevin Dillon, est également un acteur reconnu à Hollywood. Après une enfance plutôt agitée et très turbulente, Matt Dillon abandonne ses études et commence une carrière au cinéma à l'âge de quatorze ans, après avoir été repéré par un agent de casting, Vic Ramos. Pendant longtemps, il enchaîne les rôles de mauvais garçon, comme dans « Outsiders » et « Rusty James ». Le jeune acteur devient même membre auxiliaire du Brat Pack, une bande de jeunes acteurs hollywoodiens prometteurs, dont fait également partie Emilio Estevez et Demi Moore. Célèbre pour son rôle de détective privé imbécile dans « Mary à tout prix » en 1998, il s'écarte quelque temps des plateaux avant de revenir triomphant en 2005 dans « Collision ». L'acteur, vrai touche-à-tout, se fait également réalisateur en 2002, et met en scène « City of Ghosts », dont l'histoire se déroule au cœur du Cambodge. Après une longue relation avec l'actrice Cameron Diaz rencontrée sur le tournage de « Mary à tout prix », Matt Dillon s'est fiancé en 2012 avec sa nouvelle compagne et attend son premier enfant.
