Julie Andrews est une actrice, chanteuse et écrivaine britannique, née le 1er octobre 1935 à Walton-on-Thames dans le Surrey. Enfant de la balle, Julie Andrews débute sur scène à l'âge de douze ans et conquiert Broadway, en 1954, avec The Boy Friend, une comédie musicale importée d'Angleterre. Chanteuse et actrice reconnue, elle doit cependant laisser à Audrey Hepburn le soin d'incarner à l'écran le rôle principal de My Fair Lady, qu'elle avait fait triompher sur scène. Le destin lui sourit pourtant très vite lorsqu'en 1964, elle débute sur grand écran en tenant le rôle-titre de Mary Poppins, qui lui apporte la gloire et l'Oscar de la Meilleure actrice. Ironie du sort, elle décroche cette récompense alors même qu'Audrey Hepburn est elle-même nommée pour My Fair Lady. Julie Andrews enchaîne alors les comédies musicales, remportant notamment un triomphe avec La Mélodie du bonheur de Robert Wise. Elle aborde également d'autres registres tels le drame Hawai de George Roy Hill ou le thriller Le Rideau dechire, qui la fait jouer sous les ordres d'Alfred Hitchcock. Sa carrière prend une nouvelle impulsion lorsqu'elle rencontre son futur mari, le réalisateur Blake Edwards, qui lui donne quelques-uns de ses rôles les plus marquants. Une féminité plus agressive et davantage d'ambiguité caractérisent alors ses personnages dans des films comme Top Secret ou Elle, et surtout le double rôle de Victor Victoria. Après une prestation remarquée dans un autre film de son mari, That's life, où elle incarne une femme mûre atteinte d'un cancer, Julie Andrews délaisse le cinéma au profit de la télévision pendant une quinzaine d'années. C'est avec une production signée Disney, Princesse malgré elle, tournée sous la direction de Garry Marshall et dans lequel elle incarne la Reine de Génovie, qu'elle fait son grand retour au cinéma en 2001. Trois ans plus tard et après avoir prété sa voix à une autre Reine, celle de Shrek 2, elle accepte de reprendre son rôle dans une suite intitulée Un mariage de princesse. Elle ne quitte pas le monde de l'animation puisqu'elle joue dans les suites de Shrek, ainsi que dans Il était une fois, mêlant film et dessin animé. Inépuisable, elle prête sa voix à la mère de Gru, le héros de Moi, moche et méchant (2010).
