Humphrey est né à Vancouver, Colombie - Britannique aux parents Jack et Sidney Humphrey. Sa famille a déménagé à Toronto , Ontario en 1967, où son père, Jack Humphrey , a travaillé comme producteur pour CBC Radio et Télévision . Après avoir obtenu son diplôme d'études secondaires, Humphrey a déménagé à New York pour étudier l'art dramatique au Lee Strasberg Theatre et Film Institute . Humphrey a passé cinq ans à New York, revenant à Toronto plus tard, et finalement la relocalisation en Californie.Humphrey a quatre frères et sœurs. Ses trois frères, Jean , Paul et Andy, sont des musiciens professionnels. Sa sœur, Lesley, est un ancien modèle Ford .
