Robert Taylor, de son vrai nom Spangler Arlington Brugh, était un acteur américain qui devint l'un des acteurs les plus populaires d'Hollywood à partir du milieu des années 1930. Il a joué dans plus de 70 films. Fils d'un médecin de campagne, Taylor souhaitait initialement étudier la musique et s'inscrivit à l'université Doane, avant de suivre son professeur de violoncelle au Pomona College. Il y joua dans la troupe de théâtre locale, interprétant le rôle du jeune héros. Remarqué par des chasseurs de talents de la MGM, il fut admis à l'école d'art dramatique du studio. En 1934, il signa un contrat de sept ans à 35 dollars par semaine et fit ses débuts au cinéma la même année dans *A Wicked Woman*. Taylor resta sous contrat avec la MGM pendant plus de 24 ans, un record pour une star de cinéma. Son premier grand rôle fut en 1935 dans *A Doctor for All Seasons*. La même année, il partage l'affiche avec Irene Dunne dans le mélodrame *Magnificent Obsession*, un film aussi déterminant pour sa carrière que le remake de 1954 l'était pour Rock Hudson. Taylor était considéré, avec Tyrone Power, comme l'un des acteurs les plus beaux de son époque, un fait souvent critiqué. Le studio chercha donc à lui confier régulièrement des rôles plus réalistes. Il joua par la suite dans de nombreux films d'aventure et westerns. Pendant la guerre, il servit comme lieutenant dans la marine américaine. À ce titre, il forma les aspirants pilotes et réalisa 17 films de formation pour l'US Navy. Il fut également le narrateur du documentaire oscarisé *The Fighting Lady*. Après la guerre, l'acteur eut d'abord du mal à retrouver sa popularité d'antan. Ce ne furent que ses apparitions dans des fresques historiques à grand spectacle comme *Quo Vadis ?*, *Ivanhoé*, *Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde* et *L'Amour, la Mort et le Diable* qui lui permirent de renouer avec le succès. Il joua également dans de nombreux westerns. Après la fin de son contrat avec la MGM, la qualité de ses films commença à décliner. Il fonda alors sa propre société de production, Robert Taylor Productions, et joua ensuite dans la série télévisée *No Case for the FBI*, qu'il produisit de 1959 à 1962. Taylor fut membre fondateur de la Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, créée en 1944, et témoigna devant la Commission des activités anti-américaines de la Chambre des représentants, dénonçant des acteurs qu'il soupçonnait d'être communistes. Partisan du Parti républicain, il soutint la campagne présidentielle de Richard Nixon en 1960 et, en 1966, celle de son ami Ronald Reagan en Californie. De 1939 à 1951, Taylor fut marié à Barbara Stanwyck ; le couple n'eut pas d'enfants. En 1954, il épousa Ursula Thiess, avec qui il eut deux enfants. Robert Taylor mourut d'un cancer du poumon en 1969 et fut inhumé au cimetière Forest Lawn Memorial Park de Glendale. L'éloge funèbre a été prononcé par Ronald Reagan, alors gouverneur de Californie.
