Biographie:

Sir Basil Rathbone, KBE, MC, Kt (13 juin 1892 – 21 juillet 1967), était un acteur anglais. Il s'est fait connaître en Angleterre comme acteur de théâtre shakespearien et a ensuite joué dans plus de 70 films, principalement des drames en costumes, des films de cape et d'épée et, occasionnellement, des films d'horreur. Il a souvent incarné des méchants élégants ou des personnages moralement ambigus, tels que Murdstone dans David Copperfield (1935) et Sir Guy de Gisbourne dans Les Aventures de Robin des Bois (1938). Son rôle le plus célèbre, cependant, fut celui d'un héros : celui de Sherlock Holmes dans quatorze films hollywoodiens réalisés entre 1939 et 1946 et dans une série radiophonique. Plus tard, il a travaillé à Broadway et à la télévision ; il a reçu un Tony Award en 1948 pour le meilleur acteur dans une pièce de théâtre.
