La storia fa perno sul conduttore odiosamato di “Voci della notte”, programma radiofonico a telefono aperto. È il ritratto sfaccettato di un personaggio contraddittorio, affascinante ed egocentrico. È anche un'immersione allucinante nell'odierna America amara e un'analisi eccitata dell'odio razziale e antisemita. L'ottimo Bogosian collaborò con Stone alla sceneggiatura che attinge al libro di Stephen Singular Talked to Death: The Life and Murder of Alan Berg.
