Seconda metà dell'Ottocento. E' in corso la guerra ispano-americana. Il Tenente Boyd è a capo di una guarnigione sulle montagne della Sierra Nevada. Un giorno, arriva al campo un uomo stremato che racconta di essere sfuggito da una caverna in cui era rimasto imprigionato con alcuni compagni che, dopo qualche tempo, avevano iniziato a praticare il cannibalismo.
