Mary Tudor, sorella di Enrico VIII, re d'Inghilterra, è innamorata di Charles Brandon, capitano delle guardie del Re; ma la sua mano è stata chiesta dal vecchio re di Francia, Luigi XII, al quale Enrico VIII, per ragioni politiche, intende concederla in sposa. Charles Brandon viene arrestato e chiuso nella Torre di Londra, e Mary, per salvare una vita, che le è cosi' preziosa, acconsente a sposare il re di Francia, col patto che, quand'ella restasse vedova, le verrebbe concesso di unirsi all'uomo del suo cuore. Dopo qualche tempo Luigi XII muore, ma un altro pretendente s'intromette tra la vedova e l'amato Brandon
