Un tranquillo weekend di paura (1972)
Quattro amici di Atlanta (Georgia) decidono di passare un weekend discendendo in canoa il fiume Chattooga che attraversa la valle della Cahula, prima che il paesaggio sia sconvolto dalla costruzione di una diga. La gita si trasforma in un incubo di violenza e di morte. Tratto da un romanzo di James Dickey che l'ha sceneggiato e che compare nel film nella piccola parte di uno sceriffo, il film svolge i temi del confronto tra natura e civiltà, tra mondo urbano e mondo rurale e della necessità della violenza individuale a contatto con la natura selvaggia. Quello dei quattro cittadini è un viaggio negli inferi dell'inconscio, del pre-storico, del mito in un contesto di dolore e di morte. Tra le diverse scene memorabili da citare almeno il duetto di banjo e chitarra all'inizio. Ottima fotografia di V. Zsigmond.
