Verso la fine del 1943 Hitler, entusiasmato dall'avventurosa liberazione di Mussolini prigioniero sul Gran Sasso, affida all'ammiraglio Canaris il compito di studiare un piano per rapire Churchill. Dell'operazione si occupa il colonnello Radl, che per condurla a termine ha a sua disposizione un eroico colonnello dei paracadutisti, Karl Steiner, un gruppetto dei suoi più valorosi subordinati e un irredentista irlandese, Liam Devlin, insegnante di inglese a Berlino. Paracadutatisi in un villaggio di Northfolk, dove Churchill si recherà a trascorrere segretamente il «week-end», Steiner e i suoi compagni vengono ben presto smascherati, grazie a un loro atto di generosità, e attaccati da un reparto di soldati americani, che li decimano.
