Durante le convulse fasi di una guerra intergalattica, il guerriero Shep, inseguito da due killer, è costretto a rifugiarsi sulla Terra e in attesa di riparare la nave spaziale trova alloggio presso Charlie e Jenny Wilcox, tipica famiglia americana alle prese con problemi finanziari e di lavoro. Casualmente, Charlie scopre di avere in casa un extraterrestre, e, coinvolto in una sequenza di tragicomiche situazioni, finisce col condividerne gli sforzi per sfuggire ai sicari che vogliono ucciderlo.
