Nel 1928, dopo dieci anni come giornalista, Marjorie volta le spalle alla sicurezza finanziaria e al suo matrimonio, e si trasferisce in Florida, a Cross Creek. Qui va ad abitare in un cottage fatiscente circondato da un aranceto.
