La sfida del samurai (1961)
Nel XVII secolo un samurai vagabondo arriva in un villaggio insanguinato dalla guerra tra due clan e, con machiavellica strategia, diventa l'ago della bilancia mettendo gli uni contro gli altri. Splendido film d'azione in chiave ironica e di ritmo snello, ma anche limpida parabola sulla cupidigia del denaro con risvolti ironici e una lontana parentela con Goldoni (Arlecchino servitore di due padroni). Yojimbo (che significa "guardia del corpo") è il modello su cui Sergio Leone ricalcò Per un pugno di dollari e Walter Hill Ancora vivo. Ma, forse, all'origine di tutto c'è Red Harvest (Piombo e sangue, 1929) di Dashiell Hammett.
