Ladre e contente (1980)
Oregon, 1980: Jane, Elaine e Louise risentono dell'inflazione e non possono permettersi l'alto costo della vita. Jane non può permettersi una babysitter né di sposarsi e, se vuole avere un po' di privacy con il suo ragazzo, deve dormire in macchina. Ancora peggio, il padre, veterano di guerra, viene a vivere con lei e le sconvolge la vita. Louise vive una vita felice con il marito veterinario, Albert. Gestisce un negozio di antiquariato, ma poiché non ha alcun profitto, il fisco lo considera un hobby. Deve trovare i soldi per continuare a gestirlo, altrimenti avrà problemi con il fisco. Il marito di Elaine l'ha lasciata per un'altra donna e senza soldi. È in costante lotta con le banche, le compagnie elettriche e le stazioni di servizio. Ha bisogno di soldi per tirare avanti e attira anche l'attenzione dell'agente di polizia Jack. Il centro commerciale locale organizza un concorso con una palla di denaro gigante che dichiara di aiutare a combattere l'inflazione.
