Durante l'ultima guerra, la signorina Eglantine Price deve accogliere in casa due ragazzi e una bambina, Charlie, Paul e Carrie, sfuggiti ai bombardamenti di Londra. I giovani sfollati non tardano a scoprire che la loro ospite è una apprendista strega, che segue un corso per corrispondenza ed Eglantine li mette al corrente dei suoi progressi. Improvvisamente il corso per corrispondenza viene interrotto e i quattro si precipitano a Londra, a bordo di un letto magico, per scoprire il perchè: trovano il signor Emelius Brown, il docente, che ha perduto una parte del libro da cui traeva le sue lezioni, e tutti insieme si danno da fare per cercarlo. Dopo varie peripezie vengono a conoscenza delle nozioni che loro mancavano. In tal modo Eglantine, allorchè i tedeschi tentano uno sbarco nei pressi di Pepperinge, può mobilitare magicamente tutte le antiche armature di un castello delle vicinanze e ricacciarli in mare. Dopo di che la donna rinuncia alla magia per vivere nella realtà.
