Fiona, orfana di madre, va a vivere a casa dei nonni sulla costa occidentale dell'Irlanda. Dalla finestra della sua camera può vedere l'isola di Roan Inish, dalla quale proviene la sua famiglia e alla quale sono legate alcune leggende: il fratellino di Fiona, scivolato in mare con la culla durante il trasferimento dall'isola, sarebbe ancora vivo, e abiterebbe sull'isola. Fiona cerca di convincere i nonni a tornare sull'isola di Roan. Fatato, elegante, delicatissimo nel suo incrocio di leggende celtiche e aspro realismo. Sayles, regista indipendente americano, non cede mai al manierismo e asseconda il passo della favola anche quando riprende le fatiche quotidiane dei pescatori, e alla fine persino le foche e i gabbiani sembrano creature mitologiche.
