Evan Farnsworth è un insegnante di inglese in un pittoresco college nel Maine ed è rimasto prematuramente vedovo. Tra i suoi alunni vi è Andrew, un ragazzino che, infuriato per dover passare le vacanze di Natale nella scuola, finisce con il mettersi nei guai quando mette in discussione l'albero dei desideri, un secolare albero decorato con cartoline scritte a mano e utile a una raccolta di fondi di beneficenza. Fermato dalla polizia, Andrew viene rilasciato a condizione di completare venti ore di servizio sociale a settimana presso l'albero. Con l'arrivo del Natale, Evan riceve poi il compito di sorvegliare Andrew e i compagni Juliet e Drew, anch'essi rimasti al college. I tre adolescenti, grazie all'aiuto del professore e alla forza dell'albero, creeranno un forte legame tra loro e comprenderanno il vero spirito della festa.
