Essere il primo a scalare il famoso versante nord dell'Eiger è il sogno di molti alpinisti di tutta Europa nell'estate del 1936. Neanche i due alpinisti più grandi della Germania, Toni Kurz e Andi Hinterstoisser, riescono a pensare ad altro. Sono convinti che possono farcela, anche se i tentativi precedenti sono finiti in tragedia. Ad attendere coloro che arriveranno per primi in cima inoltre non c'è solo il prestigio sociale, ma anche l'oro olimpico... Mentre si preparano ai piedi del versante nord, Toni e Andi s'imbattono inaspettatamente in Luise, una vecchia fiamma di Toni. Ora è una giornalista ed è venuta con il suo collega Arau, un sostenitore del regime, per un servizio sulla prima scalata. Toni ama ancora Luise, ma lei sembra essersi invaghita dell'affascinante Arau così lui parte sconsolato per la scalata con Andi, con alle calcagna i due austriaci Willy Angerer ed Edi Rainer. All'inizio va tutto per il meglio ed entrambe le cordate fanno un'ottima scalata ma...
