Surrender To Everest (1971)
Nel 1971, l'americano Norman Dyhrenfurth guidò una spedizione di 30 alpinisti provenienti da 13 paesi diversi, tra cui Don Whillans, Dougal Haston, Naomi Uemura, Pierre Mazeaud, Michel Vaucher e altri. Questa spedizione mirava a scalare simultaneamente la parete sud-ovest e la cresta ovest diretta. Durante la salita, l'alpinista indiano Harsh Vardhan Bahuguna perì al Campo 3 durante una tempesta. La spedizione, già alle prese con problemi organizzativi, fu messa a dura prova dopo la sua morte. Gli americani decisero, unilateralmente, di abbandonare la cresta ovest. Gli europei, che avevano dedicato giorni ad attrezzare la via, furono esclusi e si sentirono relegati al ruolo di tracciatori e portatori. Il francese Pierre Mazeaud, gli alpinisti svizzeri Michel e Yvette Vaucher e l'italiano Carlo Mauri abbandonarono quindi la spedizione. Gli americani continuarono la loro salita della parete sud-ovest fino a 8.350 metri prima di rinunciare.
