Parigi. Inizio del Ventesimo secolo. Le arti dominano la vita sempre più intensa della capitale francese. Uno degli elementi catalizzatori delle nuove energie sono (come peraltro in passato) le cosiddette cortigiane. Prostitute di alto livello, partecipano della vita delle classi più elevate. Tra di loro ha un ruolo particolare Léa che, ancora assolutamente attraente, si è ritìrata a vita privata senza alcun rimpianto. Un giorno Madame Peloux, un tempo seducente collega e ora donna priva di fascino, le presenta il figlio che non sembra avere altro nome se non l'appellativo materno "Cherie". Il giovane è inesperto e Léa dovrebbe, per così dire, 'svezzarlo'. Ma lo svezzamento si trasforma in una relazione che dura sei anni. Finché, un giorno...
