Il collasso del sistema economico mondiale nel 2030 ha portato al potere la Unicom, gigante industriale, leader nelle più sofisticate tecnologie computerizzate, che ha assunto il ruolo di guida perduto dai vari governi. Ma l'autorità, esercitata con eccessiva durezza, provoca la nascita di movimenti rivoluzionari, che la compagnia tenta di soffocare infiltrando i suoi perfetti androidi tra la popolazione per individuare i dissidenti. Quando in una stazione radiotelevisiva indipendente della California viene misteriosamente assassinato Lathan Hooks, responsabile dell'impianto ed esponente di spicco della resistenza, fra gli addetti matura la convinzione che uno di loro sia un sicario della Unicom. Tyson Keen, che vi ha appena consegnato un delicato carico, e la giovane Arren, abile pilota di robot da lavoro, tenteranno ogni mezzo - compreso il cruento gioco del Crash and Burn - per scoprirne l'identità.
