Monsieur Batignole (2002)
Edmond Batignole è un piccolo bottegaio nella Parigi del 1942 occupata dai nazisti. Uomo mediocre, né collaborazionista né perseguitato, approfitta egoisticamente della disgrazia dei vicini - una famiglia di ebrei denunciata alle autorità da suo genero - per occuparne l'appartamento. Quando però Simon, il figlioletto dei vicini fortunosamente scampato alla deportazione, bussa alla sua porta, Edmond si impietosisce e, in modo rocambolesco, aiuta il bimbo a rifugiarsi in Svizzera assieme a due cuginette. Sulle orme di Benigni, Jugnot realizza un film in equilibrio tra gravità e leggerezza, tra impegno civile e gusto romanzesco, rivisitando con emozione uno dei capitoli più controversi della storia francese. Presentato al festival di Locarno, il film ha riscosso in patria un notevole successo di pubblico e di critica. Resterà nella memoria l'affilata caratterizzazione che l'attore-regista offre del francese medio negli anni dell'Occupazione.
