Alla fine del XVIII secolo, in Italia, nella dimora signorile di Don Magnifico, la giovane e graziosa Angelina lavora come cameriera. Derisa dalle sue due frivole sorellastre, Clorinda e Tisby, Angelina crede di amare un giovane valletto e si reca al ballo. Vestita con i suoi abiti più belli, vi incontra colui che in realtà è il Principe e fugge dopo avergli consegnato un braccialetto che gli permetterà di riconoscerla poco dopo. Le maschere cadono, la bontà e l'amore trionfano! «La Cenerentola» è l’ultima opera buffa composta da Gioachino Rossini per il pubblico italiano. Dramma giocoso in due atti, su libretto di Jacopo Ferretti, liberamente tratto dalla fiaba «Cenerentola» (1697) di Charles Perrault, in cui la magia è stata eliminata a favore di un realismo venato di umorismo e critica sociale. Creata per il Carnevale di Roma al Teatro Valle di Roma, il 28 gennaio 1817. Registrata dal vivo all'Opera di Glyndebourne, a Lewes, nell'East Sussex, il 2 e il 4 giugno 2005.
