La caduta della casa Usher (1928)
In casa Usher il proprietario dipinge il ritratto della moglie Madeline, ed è come se la donna vivesse nel quadro. Quando lei muore, il marito non vuole assolutamente che la sua bara venga sigillata, ma soltanto ricoperta con un sottilissimo velo. Una notte di tempesta però nel sepolcro la bara cade a terra, le candele si rovesciano dando fuoco alla casa e Madeline appare. Mentre le fiamme devastanti divorano tutto, nel quadro la figura femminile è misteriosamente scomparsa.
