Nel 1845, a Parigi, durante i festeggiamenti del carnevale, il dottor Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) sbalordisce il pubblico esibendo in un circo delle meraviglie il possente Erik, un gorilla ammaestrato che egli dice di aver catturato nel cuore dell'Africa Nera. In realtà, lo spettacolo costituisce l'alibi per poter, nottetempo, rapire giovani ragazze e realizzare un esperimento che confermerebbe la validità della teoria sull'evoluzione dell'uomo dalla scimmia: individuare un gruppo sanguigno compatibile con quello di Erik per affiancargli una compagna. Poiché le prigioniere non sopravvivono alle trasfusioni, Mirakle con l'aiuto del fedele assistente Janos si sbarazza dei loro corpi gettandoli nella Senna, ma il giovane Pierre Dupin, analizzando i cadaveri, si insospettisce e va a curiosare nel laboratorio di Mirakle appena in tempo per evitare la morte a Camille, sua fidanzata, che il folle scienziato ha appena fatto rapire da Erik.
