Josie Mayfried, una donna d'affari che lavora nell'azienda di pentole del padre, crede che il fidanzato Richard sia l'uomo perfetto ma i suoi genitori Joseph e Claire non sono d'accordo con lei. Quando Josie incontra Gridley, un ex fidanzato dei tempi del liceo, Richard elabora un piano per farsi bello agli occhi di quelli che dovrebbero divenire i suoi suoceri: Gridley accompagnerà Josie all'anniversario di nozze dei Mayfried, così quando i due vedranno la figlia con un "perdente" non avranno dubbi su chi possa essere il compagno migliore per lei. Più facile a dirsi che a farsi, il piano riserverà non poche sorprese, costringendo Josie a fare una scelta decisiva per la sua vita.
