Il produttore cinematografico Arthur Trent è nei guai. Venerdì inizieranno le riprese del film "Mademoiselle Fifi", con Dennis Morgan e Jack Carson. Ma nessuno dei registi di Hollywood vuole lavorare con Carson. Trent non ha altra scelta che suggerire a Carson di dirigere lui stesso il film. Ma non è tutto. È necessario un ruolo femminile principale, poiché nessuna attrice che si rispetti reciterebbe con Carson, soprattutto sotto la sua direzione. Morgan suggerisce quindi a Carson di invitare la giovane cameriera Judy Adams a interpretare il ruolo principale.
