La storia del profeta Geremia è una delle più tormentate vicende personali narrate dalle pagine dell'Antico Testamento. Egli svolge il suo ministero profetico in una situazione politica estremamente incerta e in anni di grande instabilità sociale, allorquando il piccolo regno di Giuda si trova schiacciato tra le poderose spinte delle superpotenze babilonese ed egiziana. Scelto da Jahvè “fin dal seno materno” per essere suo portavoce, Geremia sente come il peso schiacciante il mestiere di profeta “scomodo” e fa di tutto per rifiutare l'incarico. Ma Dio non gli dà scampo; il profeta deve annunciare, suo malgrado, la prossima distruzione di Gerusalemme e la deportazione del popolo in Babilonia.
