Nonostante si sia diplomato come il miglior studente della scuola, passato al college Jeff (Keaton) continua a non riuscire a fare colpo sulla ragazza della quale è innamorato (Withers). Agli studiosi, la giovane preferisce gli atleti. E allora vediamo il nostro protagonista dalla faccia triste industriarsi per giocare a baseball, praticare l'atletica leggera e partecipare a una gara di canottaggio grazie al sostegno interessato del preside (Harbaugh), con risultati costantemente disastrosi. Le sua doti atletiche emergeranno in tutto il loro fulgore soltanto quando viene a sapere che la ragazza è in pericolo.
