Nel 1781 la ricca ereditiera Lady Seymour Worsley genera scandalo quando al marito preferisce il suo amante, il capitano George Bisset, con cui scappa via. Il marito, sir Richard Worsley, decide allora di citarla in giudizio e di chiederle un risarcimento di 20 mila sterline per i danni provocati alla sua reputazione e alla sua proprietà. Mentre Lady Worsley e Bisset sono nascosti in un albergo di Londra, Sir Richard e i suoi legali si mettono a provare l'infedeltà della donna attraverso una serie di stratagemmi devianti.
