La città del vizio (1955)
Nel 1954 Phenix City, in Alabama, è un'oasi di vizio, gioco d'azzardo e prostituzione. Da cinquant'anni il governo locale e i giudici altamente corrotti sono sottomessi alla volontà della criminalità organizzata, che ha fatto della Quattordicesima strada il proprio nucleo operativo. In questo contesto, un gruppo di riformatori sta cercando di convincere Albert Patterson, l'avvocato più in vista della città, a passare dalla loro parte. Patterson, ormai anziano, non vuole schierarsi però con nessuno, desiderando solo di godersi la vita familiare e il ritorno del figlio John, avvocato e ufficiale dell'esercito, dalla Germania. Quando i ragazzi della Quattordicesima strada ricorreranno a omicidi e intimidazioni, Patterson prenderà posizione con l'aiuto del figlio John.
