Misha Vilyenkov (Tony Shalhoub) lavora in un laboratorio di sperimentazione sugli animali. Qui s'imbatte in un pappagallo che parla davvero (e non "a pappagallo") di nome Paulie, imprigionato in una gabbia, con il quale fa amicizia e che gli racconta la sua travagliata storia. Paulie infatti rivela di avere nostalgia della sua padroncina Marie, una ragazzina balbuziente, alla quale era stato strappato molti anni prima e che aveva cercato di ritrovare, finendo però quasi sempre nelle mani sbagliate. Misha però rimane talmente commosso dalle sue disavventure che decide di liberarlo e di aiutarlo a ricongiungersi con Marie.
