È l'adattamento del romanzo "Avere e non avere" di Hemingway. Harry Morgan fa il traghettatore sulla costa messicana. Gli capita anche di trasportare gente equivoca, che non lo paga: prima una coppia che gli sfugge senza saldare il conto, poi un'organizzazione di immigrati cinesi non del tutto pulita; infine, dei gangster veri e propri. Ma questa volta Morgan fa fuori la banda.
