Lane è un'aspirante giornalista di moda. Ha due grandi sogni nel cassetto: lavorare per la patinata rivista femminile Cosmopolitan e trovare "l'uomo magico", quello che possiede tutti i requisiti di una lista che la ragazza ha compilato sin dai tempi del college. Se la ricerca del principe azzurro appare assai ardua, a spingere Lane sulla strada di Cosmopolitan ci pensa Joanna, la sua migliore amica, fotografa di moda che le procura un colloquio con la caporedattrice della rivista. Quest'ultima la prende in simpatia e, complici le rispettive lamentele sugli uomini, le affida un servizio sotto copertura: Lane dovrà introdursi nel mondo della finanza e scovare lì il suo principe in giacca e cravatta, quello che possiede tutti i requisiti della lista. Solo così potrà guadagnarsi l'ambita copertina di Cosmopolitan.
