Renee e Jack sono una coppia sposata da pochi mesi: lei è un'investigatrice, lui è un esperto di software informatici altamente tecnologici. Uno degli ultimi casi a cui Renee deve lavorare è un brutale omicidio di una giovane donna, ma rimarrà basita davanti all'ipotesi che quella tragedia sia opera di un serial killer che si aggira per la citta: Renee, infatti, nota molte somiglianze con un precedente omicidio irrisolto, ma non sa che l'assassino è in realtà più vicino a lei di quanto si possa pensare.
