Quando un giovane afro-americano visita la tenuta di famiglia della sua fidanzata bianca, si scontra con il vero motivo che si cela dietro l’invito. Ora che Chris e la sua ragazza, Rose, sono arrivati al fatidico incontro con i suoceri, lei lo invita a trascorrere un fine settimana al nord con Missy e Dean. In un primo momento, Chris legge il comportamento eccessivamente accomodante della famiglia, come un tentativo di gestire il loro imbarazzo verso il rapporto interrazziale della figlia; ma con il passare del tempo, fa una serie di scoperte sempre più inquietanti, che lo portano ad una verità che non avrebbe mai potuto immaginare.
