Alice (Reese Witherspoon) è appena stata lasciata dal marito Austen (Michael Sheen) e con le due figlie si è trasferita a Los Angeles, nella casa dove è cresciuta. La sera del suo quarantesimo compleanno incontra un ragazzo molto più giovane di lei che le farà riscoprire cose ormai dimenticate: l’innamoramento, le feste… e la libertà che non provava da tempo. La situazione si complica quando all’improvviso il suo ex marito decide di fare marcia indietro e le chiede di tornare insieme. Ora Alice deve scegliere tra la famiglia che ha sempre voluto e una nuova travolgente storia d’amore.
