Addio, mr. Chips! (1939)
Il vecchio e timido professore Charles Chipping, alla fine della sua vita ripercorre i grandi eventi da lui vissuti da quando è insegnante nel Brookfield College: il suo arrivo e i primi anni d'insegnamento, l'amicizia con un collega in particolare, il suo matrimonio con la bella moglie Katherine, (conosciuta durante una gita in montagna), e del suo aiuto nel fare del timido professore Chipping l'adorato Mr. Chips, e la perdita di lei e del bambino al momento del parto. Ma nella sua storia c'è altro, dalla guerra che ha portato via alcuni dei suoi amati studenti all'affetto per i suoi alunni, dal conoscere per alcuni di loro ben tre generazioni, come nel caso dei ragazzi Colley, al rettorato provvisorio in tempo di guerra.
