Mary ha undici anni, capelli rossi e tanta voglia di avventura. Ospite estiva nella casa di campagna della vecchia zia, si annoia e combina guai suo malgrado. In un giorno più pigro degli altri, un gatto misterioso la conduce nel cuore della foresta dove trova e coglie un fiore magico che le dona il potere di volare a cavallo di una scopa. Al di là delle nuvole scopre piena di stupore il palazzo di Endor, una scuola di magia dove viene accolta come un'eroina. Apprezzata per il colore fiammante della chioma e per capacità che ignorava di avere, scopre a sue spese che tra le mura del prestigioso edificio cova un terribile segreto.
