Il film è una biografia romanzata della vita e della carriera del leggendario compositore statunitense George Gershwin, dalla sua infanzia a New York come figlio di immigrati russi ebrei fino al suo trionfo a Broadway e nel mondo della musica classica. La trama segue la sua ascesa, prima come song plugger (pianista dimostratore) a Tin Pan Alley, poi come autore di successi indimenticabili in collaborazione con il fratello paroliere Ira, e infine come compositore ambizioso che cerca di colmare il divario tra la musica popolare e quella sinfonica. Il racconto intreccia le sue ambizioni professionali con le sue passioni amorose, le sue amicizie (incluso il suo amico e pianista Oscar Levant, che interpreta sé stesso).
