Un editore newyorchese, terrorizzato dall'idea del matrimonio, decide di acquistare una casa per godersi la sua vita da scapolo. Presto scopre però che quelle mura sono abitate da due fantasmi, Max e Lily, una coppia di attori degli anni Trenta, che si appassionano ai problemi sentimentali e professionali dell'uomo e cercano di aiutarlo.
