Joe Gardner, direttore di una banda musicale delle scuole medie e appassionato di jazz, sogna da sempre di suonare all’Half Note, un prestigioso locale di New York. Dopo 20 anni di tentativi, finalmente riesce a ottenere una serata. Tuttavia, a seguito di un incidente, la sua anima finisce nell’aldilà, dove fa amicizia con 22, un'anima convinta terrorizzata dalla Terra, sulla quale non vuole andare. Insieme, scopriranno il significato dell'avere un’anima.
