Dolce inganno (1937)
Agli inizi del 1800, durante le guerre napoleoniche, Valentine Brown, un giovane dottore, medico in un villaggio inglese, parte volontario per il campo di battaglia, ignorando di aver reso infelice Phoebe, una ragazza, che attendeva invece che il medico le chiedesse di sposarlo. La giovane, che vive con la sorella maggiore Susan, si ritira a vita riservata e apre nella sua casa una scuola per bambini. Quando, dopo dieci anni, Valentine, promosso capitano, torna nella cittadina insieme ad altri ufficiali dell'esercito inglese, trova una Phoebe cambiata e decide di non invitarla al ballo. Phoebe, per punirlo, inventa un innocente inganno: riveste i suoi abiti di gioventù e si fa passare per Livvy, una nipote di se stessa.
