La famiglia Lowry, composta da mamma, papà e due bambini, si trasferisce a Placerville, una piccola cittadina della California, e viene "adottata" da un bel cane di razza retriever di nome Pilot. La famigliola però non sa che Pilot aspetta dei cuccioli, e quando questi nascono, mamma, papà e soprattutto i due bambini si occupano dei cagnolini. Tom, il papà, vorrebbe cederne qualcuno, ma Pilot è ben decisa a tenerli con sè...
