Adattamento musicale del romanzo di Alice Walker. Celie è cresciuta con un padre padrone che ha iniziato a violentarla quando aveva 14 anni. Per emanciparsi, si è concessa a un marito che l'ha sposata solo per poter avere una schiava che servisse lui e i figli nati dal precedente matrimonio. Per sopravvivere, Celie sceglie l'unica maniera a lei conosciuta: subire e non reagire, confessandosi solo con Dio tramite lettere che non ricevono risposta. La vita di Celie cambia drasticamente con l'arrivo di Shug, la donna di cui suo marito è innamorato.
