Ansass, giovane contadino di un piccolo villaggio, è soggiogato dal fascino di una donna di città che lo convince a sbarazzarsi della moglie Indre, facendola annegare durante una gita in barca. Ma, sul punto di commettere il delitto, l'uomo si pente. La moglie, spaventata, fugge via. Soltanto in quel momento egli comprende l'amore che Indre nutre per lui. La riconciliazione è scandita da un gioioso viaggio tra i miraggi della metropoli. Ma l'uomo rischia nuovamente di perdere la moglie durante una tempesta alla quale la fragile imbarcazione che li trasporta non è in grado di resistere. Indre riesce però a salvarsi e viene ritrovata svenuta su una roccia da alcuni abitanti del villaggio accorsi in aiuto. Intanto l'uomo respinge la donna di città venuta a cercarlo; quando è ormai sul punto di strangolarla, viene a sapere che la moglie è stata ritrovata sana e salva. Al sorgere di un'alba riconciliatrice, la coppia è di nuovo unita insieme al figlioletto.
