Sam Ali, un giovane siriano tanto sensibile quanto impulsivo, per cercare di scampare alla guerra è scappato in Libano. Clandestino, non può ottenere un visto per recarsi in Europa, dove vive l'amata Abeer. Sopravvivendo servendo cocktail nelle gallerie d'arte di Beirut, conosce Jeffrey Godefroi, noto artista contemporaneo americano con cui sigla un accordo. Accetta così di tatuarsi sulla schiena un visto Schengen come opera d'arte, inconsapevole di quanto ciò minerà per sempre la sua libertà.
