Protagonista Lorraine Burton, giovane divorziata da un marito violento ex-marine con cui ha avuto il figlio Chad di otto anni, di cui ha la custodia. Mentre cerca faticosamente di ricostruire la propria vita, ecco sulla propria strada incrociare Roy, un malvivente armato di pistola che ha appena rapinato una banca. Lorraine è al distributore di benzina per comprare qualcosa per cena prima di tornare a casa, quando rientrando in macchina trova Roy, che li sequestra per farsi portare al confine con il Messico...
