Ampiamente riconosciuto come il più grande alpinista della sua generazione, Alex Lowe era una figura di spicco nel mondo degli sport all’aperto. Suo figlio maggiore, Max, aveva solo 11 anni nel 1999 quando Alex fu sepolto da una valanga insieme al suo compagno di scalate e cameraman David Bridges alle pendici della montagna tibetana Shishapangma. Diciassette anni dopo la loro morte, i corpi di Lowe e Bridges vengono ritrovati da due alpinisti che tentavano la stessa via e, nei mesi successivi, la famiglia di Lowe si è recata sulla remota montagna per recuperarli.
