Ben Campbell è un timido e brillante studente di matematica che, avendo bisogno di pagarsi gli studi, trova nel gioco d'azzardo la soluzione ai suoi problemi finanziari. Grazie alle sue doti Ben viene reclutato in un team formato dagli studenti più dotati del college, team che svolge un'attività tanto particolare quanto redditizia: ogni weekend il gruppo muove alla volta di Las Vegas dove, utilizzando un sistema di calcolo ideato dal loro professore di matematica Micky Rosa, riesce a sbancare i casinò applicando la scienza al Black Jack.
